Kill La Kill

Finally I’m getting onto more recent anime, though Kill La Kill is already old news on the cosplay circuit. Made by Trigger, the production house founded by the key people responsible for the fantastic Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Kill La Kill begins as a wacky, exaggerated, eccentrically-but-beautifully animated high school fighting anime, with the superb Koshimizu Ami as the rebellious newcomer Matoi Ryuuko, facing down the imperious school president Kiryuuin Satsuki and her Shitenou, who employ the power of supernatural clothes. There’s lots of puns, fan-service, and slapstick, but around the halfway mark the tone and focus of the show changes, as a larger storyline develops. I’m actually not totally satisfied with this lateral move, but the anime is a lot of fun nonetheless.
