I’ve never read any of Le Carre’s novels and only recently found out that the man was a bona fide spy. Well, if the novels are as interesting as this movie I will lap them up.
Gary Oldman once again departs from the role of a psychopathic villain to play George Smiley, a recently forcibly-retired spy, brought back in to hunt down a Soviet mole at the highest level. The movie is directed by Tomas Alfredson – the director of Let the Right One In – and shares that movie’s low-key naturalistic treatment of a sensational subject.
I found the storyline and historical setting intriguing; it’s primarily about suspicion and investigation, but the action is violent and blunt (and very gory at times).
