I was warned from a couple of sources how bad this movie is, but I turned out to like it quite a bit.
The storyline is just an excuse to kill poorly-animated monsters in horribly-directed fight scenes (the utterly unnecessary start-stop takes destroy the natural beauty of the acrobatics), leading up to a rather underwhelming final battle. The mix of spoken English and Japanese continues (with some inconsistencies) from the original animation.
However, I liked the period element, the introduction of an American girl (and side characters) into a Japanese movie, and some nice set-pieces, including a fight suspended above a ravine, a battle against flying vampire ninja in an autumn forest, and a spooky rural village (in Japan, the creepiest stuff happens out in the countryside).
It’s a fun action movie, with slightly more to offer than the average.
