The Hunger Games (Film)

I’m far too old to read the next YA blockbuster series, The Hunger Games, but I’ve heard many things about it. As the movie stars an actress I like (Jennifer Lawrence) and concerns a survival game (a setup I’m fond of), I gave it a chance, and ended up enjoying the experience.

Both Jennifer Lawrence and Donald Sutherland were great, but the format didn’t do the rest of the cast any favours, leaving them pretty shallow – Woody Harrelson for example had almost no screen time. The costume design for the capitol residents was over-the-top garish.

The storyline and action was pretty good, including the complicated romance between the male character and Lawrence’s character. The business about sponsors and tests seemed redundant in the end, as not much came of it though.
