This is an amazing movie – a film noir set in a high school, with a tonne of tricky plot twists and thick slang that forces you to put on the subtitles and even pause the movie to digest it.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the protagonist, investigating the death of this ex, questioning stoners, brawling with jocks, trying to keep the principal off his back, and getting involved in drug trafficking. As far as the genre goes, JGL didn’t get beaten up as much as I expected (he did a lot of beating), and there wasn’t as strong a sense of class divide as I would have thought. On the other hand, I only know about noir via secondary sources.

Anyway, the storyline is excellent, and the transposition clever and appropriate (some of the juxtapositions are very strange – like the Pin’s mother). I found the movie fresh and compelling.
