Argo 2012

For an Oscar winner I was expecting something more; Argo is a straightforward historical drama about the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. I really enjoyed the depiction of the era (though the fashions were incredibly ugly), but there was very little to latch onto – there are way too many characters for the time available, and according to Wikipedia, all the dramatic moments are fictional. (Apparently Argo was in reality an attempted adaptation of Roger Zelazny’s “Lord of Light” – an excellent novel.)

I’ve got to wonder whether the film would have been as well-received if Clooney and Affleck were not behind it.
