Robot Jox

I watched this 1989 movie quite a while back; it’s certainly very dated. The movie uneasily straddles kid-friendly matinee material and more serious content (with more fatalities than I expected). The most terrifying thing for me (beyond the overacting) was the 80s hair. So much 80s hair. And beware the terrible dancing in terrible clothes.

There are only a couple of stop motion giant robot fights, but I thought it was interesting how the lasers hit instantly. The US versus USSR concerns of the period (including espionage) were reflected in the storyline, and presumably in a nod to the country’s technological ascendancy, the scientist was Japanese.

It’s not something I’d recommend nowadays, but I can understand why a kid 20 years ago would enjoy it.
