The Equalizer

This movie was a surprise for me, a seemingly unremarkable action flick (adapted from an old TV series) that turned out to be one of my favourite movies of 2014. Denzel Washington plays an unusually disciplined hardware store worker who is friendly and helpful to the people around him – he attempts to help a young prostitute (Chloe Moretz), and ends up fighting the Russian Mafia using some amazing skills and lots of ingenuity.

The movie is often comedic, and takes its time with the characters. Unlike many action leads, Washington is incredibly likeable, and you’ll cheer when he gives the bad guys what they deserve. Moretz is great as (almost) always. Apparently there’s a sequel on the way, and I’ll watch it when it comes out.
